For example, during one of the games, the author uses the simile “ bounced up like an acrobat” (298). Grisham used a variety of devices throughout the book, especially when he is describing the action of the football games. There is constantly new developments to the story, so you don’t want to stop reading.Īnd in addition to being descriptive and suspenseful, this book also made great use of figurative language. This book also does an excellent job of pulling the reader in and building suspense. There are many different round and flat characters, and each one has their own personality. The reader can tell that the author knows Italy well, and it feels like they are experiencing the Italian culture firsthand. Firstly, the author does an excellent job of describing both the characters and setting. I loved reading this book for many reasons. Rick faces big internal conflicts, such as trying to regain his confidence, and make big decisions about both his career and his life. During his time in Italy, Rick faces many external antagonists, including opposing teams to the media, but Rick’s largest enemy throughout the book is himself. Rick is constantly met with new surprises, both on and off the field, ranging from romance to legal problems. Football is overshadowed by soccer and rugby, and his teammates play for free, simply because they love the game. Rick eventually finds that Italian football is much different from the NFL. Rick travels across the ocean to play in this amatuer league, where he is forced to adapt to an unfamiliar culture.

After his humiliating performance, the only team that will take him is the Parma Panthers, located in a quaint city in northern Italy. The story’s protagonist is Rick Dockery, a third-string quarterback who manages to blow a seventeen point lead in the AFC champion, and becomes the largest laughing stock in football. This novel is a fabulous choice for anyone interested in football who is looking for a suspenseful, well-written novel that you won’t want to put down.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book Playing for Pizza by John Grisham.
